Is It Smart to Hire During a Pandemic?

December 1, 2020

In 2020, we had to ask ourselves: Should I hire during a pandemic?

Some employers had open positions before the coronavirus outbreak but pulled those positions back when the economy looked uncertain. Other employers look ahead and see their need to hire but are hesitant to act and make that commitment.

Well, nine months later, we hope it was clear: The pandemic isn’t likely going to end any time soon. The same can’t necessarily be said about your candidates’ availability.

So, what about you? If you know you’re going to need to hire staff in the next 1-2 months, when should you get started? The short answer is now.

Businesses and individuals alike are putting off spending until the shelter orders lift. However, behind the slowdown, a wave of demand is building. Don’t get caught in the wave!

Once that shelter order is lifted again, there will be a scramble to fill positions. We saw this over the summer, and we can expect to see it again.

Different people waiting for their turn in a job interviewShrewd employers know it takes time, effort, and careful footwork to find the right person. And even if they’re not ready to pull the trigger right this minute, they are doing the prep work and getting set up in our queue so we can begin their search as soon as it’s time. Even in the easiest of hiring markets, extraordinary candidates are tough to discover, and finding a great employee takes time.

This is a time of unknowns, but this is also a time of opportunity. This might be the best hiring market we see for some time. Highly talented people are out of work through no fault of their own. They are at home, they are polishing their resumes, and they are starting to call us. So, yes—it is wise to hire during a pandemic.
